To download: the wallpapers of each version of Mac OS X published since 2001

The wallpapers offered by the Mac system are mostly very successful. This is particularly the case for macOS Big Sur. You can also find them here for download. Unfortunately, each new version of the OS puts some old wallpapers in the trash, wallpapers that we were able to appreciate and that we would like to be able to find again.

Fortunately, there is Stephen Hackett and his very good specialized Apple blog 512pixels.net. On the latter, you can indeed find all the wallpapers offered by Apple on each of its versions of macOS. This ranges from Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah to Big Sur, Leopard and even Server versions of the OS.

How to download these wallpapers?

On Mac:

  • Go to this address
  • For the desired wallpaper, click on the mention “Download 5K version”
  • Then, on the displayed image, right click
  • Choose “Download linked file as”
  • Choose a location on your Mac
  • Open your Mac’s settings, “Desktop and screen saver” section
  • Drag the wallpaper file from the Finder onto the current wallpaper image, or add the folder containing the new wallpapers using the “+” at the bottom left
  • Finally, choose the desired image

On iPhone and iPad:

  • Go to this address via Safari, Firefox, Chrome or another browser app on your iPhone or iPad
  • For the desired wallpaper, click on the mention “Download 5K version”
  • Long press on the image
  • Choose “Add to Photos
  • Go to the Photos application, on the desired wallpaper
  • Tap the “Share” icon
  • Choose “Use as wallpaper”
